How to Display Sea Glass

Sea glass is a unique treasure formed by nature recycling human litter. When broken glass from things like old bottles, plates or windows end up in the sea, the salt water and sand tumble them to a smooth, frosted finish. Sea glass is becoming increasingly harder to find since the institution and enforcement of strict waste disposal laws, and since many products formerly made of glass are now made of plastic and other materials. If you have a collection of sea glass, don̵7;t hide away these rare gems̵2;put them on display for all to see.

Instructions

  1. Table Display

    • 1

Fill a clear glass vase, lamp base, bowl, bottle or jar with an assortment of sea glass.

    • 2

Use glass pebbles to make your collection look larger than it is, if necessary. Place the sea glass around the edges of the glass container and add the glass pebbles to the center. Cover the top of the contents of the container with a layer of sea glass to hide the glass pebbles.

    • 3

Place your display on a side table, counter or windowsill to show it off. It will look particularly dazzling in natural light or on a glass table top.

    Hanging Display

    • 4

Cut some 16 gauge copper wire into 18-inch strips. You will need one strip for each piece of sea glass you want to hang.

    • 5

Take one strip of wire and wrap one end around a piece of sea glass until the wire holds the glass securely.

    • 6

Continue wrapping sea glass in wire until you have as many pieces as you desire.

    • 7

Find or make a hanger from which to suspend the wired sea glass. Use a decorative clothing hanger, a piece of coiled wire loop, a short length of 1/4-inch copper pipe or a piece of driftwood or branch.

    • 8

Take one piece of sea glass wrapped in wire. Wrap the top end of the wires around the hanger so the sea glass hangs at the desired length. Hang more sea glass from the hanger. Hang some from the other pieces of wire-wrapped sea glass to make an even longer display.

    Jewelry Display

    • 9

Select one piece of sea glass to make a pendant. Use a needle-nose pliers to make a small loop at the end of a piece of silver wire. Twist it to secure the loop. Make sure your loop is wide enough for your chain to fit through.

    • 10

Wrap the wire around your sea glass in an interesting design, such as a spiral or a crisscross pattern. Test that the wire wrapping holds the sea glass securely.

    • 11

Snip off excess wire. Thread a chain through the loop of your sea glass pendant to wear it around your neck.
