What Is Sea Glass?
"Sea glass" is a name used for small fragments of glass that have been weathered and smoothed by water, sand and salt into something attractive and collectable.
How It's Created
Glass fragments from litter thrown in water near a lake or ocean beach take years, even decades, to be washed back onto the beach. During this time, they are transformed into sea glass.
Finding Sea Glass
The best places to find sea glass are public beaches that have once had a littering problem. Some collectors' websites keep lists of good beaches for hunting.
Uses
Sea glass is collected for use by beachgoers who will often display their collection in clear containers or use it in the creation of jewelry.
Artificial Sea Glass
Due to the practice of littering becoming less tolerated, sea glass is becoming more scarce as the years progress. For this reason, artificial sea glass is produced in rock tumblers and sold.
