How to Use Sea Glass

Uncovering a sea glass shard (beach glass) is akin to finding treasure. One stumbles upon it while walking on the beach. Tumbled by the waves, it is often hidden in pebbles or sand. Don't throw the shard into a glass jar, recycle it! Create jewelry, wind chimes or sun catchers. Decorate table tops, mirrors and picture frames. Discover how to use sea glass for these simple projects.

Instructions

  1. Home Décor

    • 1

Use sea glass as accents in home décor. Put sea glass in a clear vase, filling it 1/3 of the way up. Add a flower bouquet using complimentary colors. Fill with water up to the sea glass mark and set on a table near a window to catch the sun.

    • 2

Place sea glass at the bottom of a votive tray. Set tea lights in clear glass onto the tray of sea glass and light the candles. The glow of the candles will capture the colors of sea glass underneath.

    • 3

Using memory wire shears cut the length of two loops (rings) of memory wire per wine glass. Fill a shallow plastic container with enough water to partially cover a shard of sea glass. Mark the spot to drill with pencil. Wearing safety goggles, drill a hole through the glass. Dry off the sea glass and slip it onto the wire. Add a sea shell or starfish charm. Place completed ring on the stem of glassware for a personal touch.

    Create a Mosiac

    • 4

Create a mosaic on a terracotta pot. Clean the surface of the terracotta pot to remove any dirt or dust. Dry thoroughly. On a piece of paper, draw a rough sketch of a pot. Lay out a design using the sea glass pieces onto the sketch. Be certain to space the pieces ¼ inch apart.

    • 5

Wearing thin rubber gloves, apply a bead of the silicone adhesive to the back of a sea glass piece. Set the glass piece onto the desired position of the pot and hold for a few seconds. Continue working the design around the pot until the design is complete. Allow to dry for several hours.

    • 6

Using a smooth-edged modeling tool fill in the spaces between the sea glass with grout. Wipe off any loose grout that gets onto the sea glass with a small sponge. Set the pot on newspaper to dry overnight.

    Design a Pendant

    • 7

Design a sea glass pendant. Choose an uncommonly-shaped sea glass piece. Position the sea glass in the middle of the wire. Wrap each end of the wire across the glass.

    • 8

Using one end, wrap it on an angle across the top of glass twice. Cross the other wire end along the bottom of the glass to enclose it. Pull the two wires upward and cross them. Twist them around one another twice with the round nose pliers.

    • 9

Bend one end of the wires with the round nose pliers to a 90º angle. Grasp the wire end and roll downward to make a loop. Wrap the extra wire around the bottom of the loop itself to secure it. Alternately, coil the extra wire in a design to lay across the center front of the sea glass. Secure both wires so they remain flat by pushing them into the wrapping. This prevents scratches. Slip onto a 16-inch snake chain.
