How to Clean Sea Glass

Once the hard work of combing the beaches and picking through the remnants of low tide are complete, all that is left to do is clean the collected sea glass. It does not require much elbow grease or many cleaning products, as the ocean waves have already done most of the work. Just grab your collection, some soapy water and get to work.

Instructions

  1. Get Rid of the Smell

    • 1

Get a large bucket and fill with warm, soapy water. Wash the glass to help remove any odor left over from the ocean and low tide.

    • 2

Submerge the found sea glass into the water. Be sure to do so gently to prevent any pieces of glass from breaking.

    • 3

Let the sea glass soak for a while. The soap and water will help to release the ocean smell and loosen any sand stuck to the glass. Rinse each piece gently but thoroughly. You may wish to place the pieces in a colander first, especially if they are quite small.

    • 4

Lay the collection outside in a safe area. Spread out each piece and let them air dry for a while, also helping to rid the glass of any smell.

    Perfect Each Piece

    • 5

Use a soft bristled brush to gently scrub along each piece of sea glass. Be sure to clean off any dirt or grime without scraping the glass.

    • 6

Rinse a final time. This will remove any dirt you raised with the brush.

    • 7

Use a soft cloth or towel to dry and wipe each piece of sea glass clean before storing.

    Keep up the Collection

    • 8

Take the time to dust off your collection on occasion, especially if the collection is displayed in an open container.

    • 9

Clean sea glass jewelry by using a jewelry cleaner if the sea glass is attached to metal.

    • 10

Wash out bottles or cases that sea glass pieces are stored in when necessary so the collection appears as vibrant, colorful and clean as possible.
