How to Dry Out Sea Stars

Sea stars, also known as starfish, are found in many different sizes and colors. Finding a washed-up and dead sea star along the beach can be a pleasant surprise. Once you discover the starfish, take it home to preserve it immediately so that it remains in good condition. Before you dry out the starfish, it needs cleaned thoroughly to remove dirt and debris from its surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up the sea star carefully to avoid breaking off one of its legs. Scoop the sea star up with your hands and place it in a bucket or container. Add water to the container to prevent the starfish from drying out until you clean it thoroughly.

    • 2

Place the sea star in a clean bucket or sink. Pour 70 percent isopropyl rubbing alcohol over the starfish to cover it completely. Allow the starfish to soak in the alcohol for 48 hours.

    • 3

Remove the sea star from the rubbing alcohol. Place it on a stack of paper towels or a clean towel.

    • 4

Place the sea star outdoors in the direct sunlight. Weigh the starfish legs down to prevent them from curling up as it dries. Select objects, such as books, that are not too heavy so you do not break the legs.
