How to Identify Murex Shells

Murex shells (also known as Haustellum haustellum) are a species of sea snail. They are considered a prized collector's item, so whether you are looking to add to your own collection or sell it for a profit, this shell could easily meet your needs. Of course, you have to be absolutely certain you have the correct species, so knowing what to look for in this unique shell is vital.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the shell. Murex shells are generally around 4.7 inches (12 cm) long.

    • 2

Analyze the color of the shell, as murex shells generally have horizontal lines of color ranging from black to brown, and down to cream.

    • 3

Consider your location. These shells are found on the rocks in shallow water, and are widespread in the Indo-Pacific waters.

    • 4

Look at the style of the body of the shell. The winged and pungent spines of the murex shell sets it apart from most other species and, combined with the above factors, should allow you to identify it.

    • 5

Become aware of the different names the murex shell goes by. This will help you identify them in a display, even if they are labeled differently. Alternate names include murex haustellum linne, Snipe's Bill, Snipe's Bill Murex, Snipe's Bill Shell, Snipe's Bill Woodcock Murex, Woodcock Murex, Orange Murex, and Linne seashell.
