Things You'll Need
Instructions
Check with the local park service to find out if shell collecting is legal in your area, and if it is regulated. Also ask if there are parking fees for the beaches that you want to visit, and what the fees are.
Visit the beach in the early hours so that you arrive before casual visitors disrupt the beaches. Look for a beach that is protected from rough surf, which is not a great habitat for shellfish.
Hunt for shells after a big storm, which kicks up swells and brings more shells to the beach.
Look for areas where the sand is bubbling or squirting. Clammers use this as an indication of live clams, but you can use the same holes to give you an idea of where to dig.
Dig carefully and slowly, placing the spades of sand on the screen and using water to sift it.
Take pictures to remember the moment (or to help you remember the beach where you found each shell), and then bring your collection home.
