What Are Upper Deck Baseball Cards?

Upper Deck first appeared as a brand of baseball cards prior to the 1989 season. The company gained fame because of the quality of their product. The technology used for their cards was considered groundbreaking for its first year. Upper Deck remains an active series for baseball card collectors in 2011. The company has released several additional series of cards in addition to its primary Upper Deck line. Upper Deck has since partnered with video games to provide statistics and remains a force in the collecting world.
  1. History

    • Upper Deck received a license from Major League Baseball and began releasing cards for the 1989 season. Upper Deck was the first brand to feature holograms on every card. The initial set featured one of the most popular baseball cards of the '90s, a rookie card of then-Seattle Mariners outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. Upper Deck began introducing side brands such as its SP line. A rookie card from the 1993 SP set of Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter also became popular.
