How to Make a Hockey Card Database

Like the sport of hockey, the hobby of collecting hockey cards has a devoted following. Hockey cards debuted around 1910 and were distributed in packs of cigarettes. That method of distribution had been almost entirely phased out by World War I. Traditionally, collectors kept their hockey cards rubber-banded in stacks or in shoeboxes. Modern collectors keep their valuable hockey cards in plastic sheets or Lucite display cases. Making a database using a computer spreadsheet program allows enthusiasts to track their collections and have the information readily available.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which aspects of your hockey card collection you want to track in your database. Some examples are the year of the card, the company that produced it, the card's number in that year's series and the name of the player portrayed on the card.

    • 2

Open your spreadsheet program on your computer. If you sort your cards by year and set, write the name of the hockey card company and the year the set was released on the top row of your spreadsheet. Topps, O-Pee-Chee and Upper Deck are some of the major companies that have produced hockey cards.

    • 3

Type in the card's number in the set in the next row of your spreadsheet. In the succeeding columns of the spreadsheet, type in the player's name and his team. Moving to the right on your spreadsheet, include more information in the next columns such as the player's position and the condition of the card.

    • 4

Take advantage of your spreadsheet's auto-populate function if you are sorting the cards in your database in numerical order. Type the numbers of the first two cards in your set into the proper cells on your spreadsheet (for example, "1" and "2"). Use the drag select function to highlight the two numbers. Click on the fill handle function of your program and drag it down to a cell further down the page. For example, if your first two cards are in cells A1 and A2, drag it down to cell A26. Your spreadsheet should automatically fill in the numbers through 26.

Include a column in your database for the card's approximate value and one for optional notes on the card, such as whether it is autographed or a special edition.
