How to Price My Hockey Cards

Hockey cards are fun to collect, and fun to value as well. Whether you have a modern card or a vintage card, and whether you are a serious collector or a casual fan, you can use several pricing guides to quickly and easily figure out just how much your card is worth. Rookie Stars and Sports Lizard both offer free pricing guides, while Beckett requires a subscription. You can also stop by a card show if you would rather have a real human being value your card.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the RookieStars website, which provides free price guides for baseball, basketball, football and hockey. Go to the hockey section, determine what year your card was made and navigate to the year or era for your card. Go to your card's brand and then locate the player. As of December 2010, the site only had pricing up to the 2008-09 season.

Try the Sports Lizard website to price your card. Sports Lizard is another free pricing guide, but it does not feature a guide with a list of players. Instead, you must enter the year of the card, the brand or type and the player's name, such as "2007-08 Hot Prospects Alexander Ovechkin," and then click "Price It." The website uses data from sales on eBay, its own site and other collectors' websites to return an estimated value to you.

Visit Beckett's website, a popular pricing guide with values for cards up to the latest releases available, for a comprehensive listing of card values. You must pay a fee to view the pricing guide, however. Once signed up, if you know the year, brand and player on your card, you can quickly navigate to your card and its listed value. For some brands or years, only some notable stars will have their own prices, whereas everyone else is simply valued as "Common."

Attend a card show if you would rather have your card valued by an expert in person. Card shows or conventions are a way for collectors to meet up in cities across the nation to price their collections, sell their cards or view what others have to offer. Trading Card Central has a list of card show calenders. Click on the PSA Show Calendar link for a list of upcoming Professional Sports Authenticator shows, or on the Beckett Show Calendar link and enter your city, the month you are available to visit a show and select the Beckett Hockey Magazine option from the drop-down menu.
