How to Remove a Card From a PSA Graded Card Holder

PSA, or Professional Sports Authenticators, is one of the largest and most respected card grading and autograph authenticating companies. After they inspect a grade, they place it into a sealed card holder and place a grading sticker on the holder. The grade the card receives is from 1 to 10, with 10 meaning the card is flawless and in perfect condition. If the card did not receive a high grade, it may be worth more out of the card holder than in, having the poor grade displayed. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to remove the card from the holder. The holder must be pried open to remove the card.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the top portion of the card holder upward to create separation between the top and bottom card holder pieces. The holder will not have much give; it will only slide a tiny bit. However, it should slide enough to allow the upper portion of the holder to hang slightly over the bottom of the holder.

    • 2

Push up on the upper left and right hand card holder corners, only pushing on the portion of the holder where the top half is separated from the bottom half. As you push, the corners may break or the sides will begin separating. Continue pushing upward until the corners break or the unit does not appear to be separating any further.

    • 3

Slide a butter knife into the separation gap or corner holes. Continue to pry open the card holder until the entire top half is pried off. When attempting to do this, ensure you are lifting the top half upward, not pushing the case downward. The card is held in the bottom half of the card holder, so pressing downward can scratch, ding or dent the card.

    • 4

Tilt the bottom half of the card holder slowly until the card falls from the holder. Do not attempt to lift the card from the holder as you may bend the corners.
