About Football Trading Cards

Collecting football cards is a hobby both parents and children can participate in together. How you collect your football cards is entirely up to you. You can assemble complete sets from a manufacturer in a year, collect all the cards of your favorite player or collect limited edition football cards that were produced in low amounts.
  1. Companies

    • There are multiple companies that produce football trading cards, including Topps, Fleer, Upper Deck and Donruss. Each company produces multiple sets of football cards in a year.

    Autographed Cards

    • In the 1950s through the 1980s, the only way to get autographed football cards was to go to autograph signings and have your cards signed, or purchase cards from others that went. Since then, card companies have produced football cards with signatures from players in the packs of cards.

    Memorabilia Cards

    • Not only are autographed cards popular but so are cards with pieces of footballs, jerseys and even football fields themselves. These cards are known as memorabilia cards.

    Rookie Cards

    • Rookie cards in a football card set are the first year a card is produced for a player in that company's football card set. Sometimes, a rookie card can be a year for one set and the next year for another set, if that player's card was not included in the previous year's set for that company.

    Limited Production Cards

    • Card companies produce limited numbers of certain cards in each football card set. These can be rookie cards, autographed cards or memorabilia cards. Each of these cards indicate how many of the card were produced, and the lower the number, the more likely it is to have a higher value with collectors.
