Decide if you'd like to collect the cards of specific players, a favorite team or NBA cards in general. You can also purchase cards by specific manufacturers such as Fleer, Upper Deck and Topps.
Buy in packs or boxes if you're attempting to build a quick collection of common cards. Purchase them online or at sports card and memorabilia shops, toy and discount stores or through manufacturer websites.
Search trading card or sports memorabilia shops for individual cards of favorite players. Online auctions and sports and card conventions are also good sources. When buying more expensive ones, like hot rookie cards, limited editions or those commemorating league MVPs, check their condition and authenticity first.
Store and protect cards in clear trading card sheets within a three-ring binder. Stacks of less valuable cards can be housed in plastic cases, while more important individual editions can be kept in durable screw-down or snap-tight plastic holders.
Keep track of large collections with a list or in a computer database. Software is also available to catalog trading cards.
Check the value of your collection with pricing guides available at bookstores, trading card shops or on the Internet.
Protect favorite or valuable cards from theft, fire and floods by storing them in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box.
