How to Organize Stamps

Stamps come from every corner of the globe and have been used in correspondence for decades. It can be a challenge to keep foreign or aging stamps in a cohesive and clear organizational pattern. The ideal system will involve investing in a stamp collector three-ring binder which will allow stamps to be organized in a simple and pleasing fashion. The presentation of the stamp can be just as important as its preservation.

Instructions

Choose which way you would like to order the stamps. Stamps can be organized by country, year, region or style. Organizing by country is ideal for international stamp collectors. For collectors of a single country, utilizing the year of issue, style or region will be ideal.

Mount the stamps reflecting the organizational technique decided upon in Step 1. Use blank-sheet binder stamp albums to create unique pages. For example, if you have five stamps from a region in the United States, create a page devoted to that region. Connect the stamps with hinges. Hinges are specialty mounts made for stamps, with a light adhesive which will attach the stamp to the binder page without destroying it. Moisten the short, folded flap on the hinge slightly and attach the stamp. Moisten the long section of the hinge and attach it to the blank sheet. Repeat for all of the other stamps.

Place each page of mounted stamps in chronological or alphabetical order, depending on what type of organization you decide to use in Step 1. Add headings to each page, depicting the themes. Store the album in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat.
