Uses for Postage Stamps

Postage stamps are available for purchase through the U.S. Postal Service or any shipping company. The use of the stamps vary depending on the person and the stamp. Individuals can make use of stamps as they prefer, such as collecting or in crafts.
  1. Decorative Box

    • Make a decorative box using a plain tin, wooden or even cardboard box as the base. Select stamps for the box and prepare them. For stamps that are attached to envelopes, soak in water until they peel free and then allow them to dry. Apply an adhesive material to the box using a paint brush and then gently smooth a stamp over the box, starting at the bottom of the box lid. Line up the next stamp so it matches up to the first and smooth it down. Work around the lid and then the body of the box in the same manner. If the stamps are too large for the box sides, cut them around the borders to fit or use the large stamps for the lid only.

    Collecting

    • Collectors gather both old and new stamps in various conditions and states. Most stamps in a collection are unlikely to have high monetary value, but it is easy to collect stamps by taking the stamp off old letters. Some stamps, especially old and rare stamps, are potentially worth thousands of dollars, especially if they are in good condition. In collecting stamps, collectors will often look for old stamps or stamps which have very few copies. The condition of the stamp, such as whether there are tears, is another factor in collecting.

    Making a Picture

    • For the artist, postage stamps can act as inspiration. Artists might form a mosaic out of several stamps in various colors or make a collage of the stamps. For example, as part of a project, artists might put several stamps under the same theme together to form an image collage, like using animal stamps or stamps with birds and putting them into an order that forms a picture of a bird.

    Stamp Jewelry

    • Postage stamp jewelry is another option for a stamps. The jewelry varies depending on the piece. For example, earrings will require two of the same or a similar stamp to make a matching pair. The stamps are placed in frames, which can be found several forms such as squares, rounds or even triangles or heart shapes. If necessary, the image is cut to fit the frame. The frames are covered with glass or clear plastic to hold the stamp in place.
