How to Get Stamps Out of Books

Stamp collecting is a popular hobby because it is easy to do and provides collectors with a wide range of collection options: international stamps, domestic stamps, stamps with people, stamps with animals and so on. Sometimes stamps can be purchased loosely, that is, not adhered to anything. However, sometimes stamps are still attached to envelopes or inside of books. These stamps should be removed from the paper to which they are attached before being added to a collection. Soaking is the best method for removing stamps from paper.

Things You'll Need

  • Shallow pan
  • Warm or cool water (depending on the paper)

Instructions

  1. Stamps on White Paper

    • 1

Tear or cut out around the stamp in the book. Leave a small margin of paper around the stamp.

    • 2

Fill a pan or bowl with warm water. The water should be warm, not hot.

    • 3

Place the paper with the stamp face-down in the pan of warm water. Soak it for several minutes or until the stamp detaches itself from the paper and sinks to the bottom of the bowl. This process could take longer with self-adhesive (more modern) stamps.

    • 4

Remove the stamp from the water using tongs or tweezers.

    • 5

Place the wet stamp between two paper towels and place a flat, heavy object on top to keep the stamp's edges from curling as it dries. Leave it to dry overnight.

    Stamps on Colored Paper

    • 6

Tear or cut out around the stamp in the book. Leave a small margin of paper around the stamp.

    • 7

Fill a shallow pan with cool water.

    • 8

Place the paper with the stamp face-up in the pan of cool water and let it soak for several minutes. If the water becomes colored from the paper dyes, replace the water.

    • 9

Remove the stamp from the water using tongs or tweezers once the stamp has detached from the paper.

    • 10

Place the wet stamp between two paper towels and place a flat, heavy object on top to keep the stamp's edges from curling as it dries. Leave it to dry overnight.
