How to Collect Historical Stamps

Stamps that celebrate particular historical events, places and personages are known as commemorative stamps. These stamps are usually issued in themed sets, like the Christopher Columbus series that commemorate his explorations to the New World.

  Choose a theme. A theme gives your collection cohesion and it can keep you focused on what you are looking for amongst the large quantity of stamps available in the marketplace. Select a historical figure for your theme or other notable event in history like the Apollo moon landing.

  Browse online auction sites for sets of commemorative stamps that fit your theme. Type in a descriptive term for your theme and the word "commemorative" into your search engine to find a list of suitable lots. Bid on the stamps that match your theme.

  Mount the stamps in an album. Devote a separate page to each commemorative set and space them out accordingly. Within the album arrange the sets chronologically or by country of origin.
