How to Identify the Value of a First-Class Stamp

Collecting stamps is a hobby enjoyed by people of all ages. Depending on rarity, color and general condition, the stamp can be extremely valuable or worth only face value. In addition, a key factor in determining how valuable a stamp is will be the demand for it. Highly sought-after stamps will be worth more than others. In addition, stamps that are found in mint, or unused, condition will be worth much more than stamps that have been used. Also remember that just because the stamp says it is worth 10 cents does not necessarily mean that's its value.

Instructions

  1. Identifying Face Value

    • 1

      Look at the stamp.

    • 2

Look at the bottom left- or right-hand corners.

    • 3

If there is a number, this will be the face value of the stamp. For example, if there is 32 in one of the corners, then it means the stamp is worth 32 cents.

    Determining Collection Value

    • 4

Perform an initial inspection of the front of the stamp. Check for any tears, rips in the perforations or stains. Also examine it to see if there is any evidence of a postmark.

    • 5

Look at the back of the stamp. Examine it to see if it has been removed from an envelope, a piece of paper or used in any other way.

    • 6

Look at a copy of Scott's Standard Postage Stamp Catalog. This book can be found in libraries or in bookstores. This book can help determine if the stamp is rare and can help give you an idea of the stamp's value. The book can also tell you information about the stamp such as its history.
