How to Mount Stamps

Stamp mounts are protective, split-back sleeves that enable collectors to attach stamps individually to album pages without affecting the stamp itself. They provide an alternative to stamp hinges which do not protect the face of the stamp and adhere to the glue on back. Stamp collecting is regarded by many as both a hobby and an investment. Over time, some stamps can become quite rare and valuable. Because of this, great care must be taken when mounting stamps.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the stamp mount in your hand, clear side down, and lift one flap on the back of the mount.

    • 2

Pick up the stamp with your other hand, using the stamp tongs, and insert the stamp face-down under the lifted mount flap. Lift the other flap and, using the tongs, lay the stamp flat, inside the mount. Close both flaps over the back of the stamp.

    • 3

Moisten your fingertip on the sponge or cloth and dampen the adhesive on the upper edge of the stamp mount's top flap. Turn the mount around so that the stamp face is viewable and, being sure that the stamp is upright, press the mount firmly onto the album page.

    • 4

Allow the mount to dry in place overnight.
