Regular Issued Stamps
In 1970, there were three regular stamps issued in the United States. There were two Dwight Eisenhower stamps issued, one for 6 cents and the other for 8 cents. And one of our Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin, was also featured on a stamp for 7 cents. In the early 1970's, American journalist Ernie Pyle, women's rights pioneer and first woman doctor Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell and Bank of America founder Amadeo Giannini were all also featured on regular issued stamps.
Commemorative Issued Stamps
In 1970, there were 11 commemorative stamps. The American poet, biography and author Edgar Lee Masters was pictured on a 6-cent commemorative stamp. A Servicemen 6-cent stamp was issued to celebrate 50 years of service, as well as to remember those soldiers who were prisoners of war, missing, or killed while in action. Three political commemorative stamps were issued: a 6-cent Anti-Pollution stamp, a 6-cent stamp celebrating the 50th anniversary of Women's Suffrage and a 6-cent Wildlife Conservation stamp. Two 6-cent commemorative state stamps we issued celebrating the 150th anniversary of Maine's statehood and the 300th anniversary of the founding of South Carolina. A Natural History 6-cent stamp was also issued depicting the American Bald Eagle, African Elephant Herd, the Age of Reptiles and Haida Ceremonial Canoe. The 150th anniversary of Fort Snelling, Minnesota was depicted on a 6-cent commemorative stamp, as was the Stone Mountain Memorial. And the 25th anniversary of the United Nations was also depicted on a 6-cent commemorative 1970 stamp.
Holiday Issued Stamps
There were three special holiday issued stamps that were released in 1970. The Landing of the Pilgrims was a 6-cent stamp celebrating the 350th anniversary of the anchoring of the Mayflower in Cape Cod (Provincetown Harbor), Massachusetts in November of 1620. The Christmas Nativity 6-cent stamp was a holiday stamp celebrating the birth of Jesus. The Christmas Toys 6-cent stamp showed different popular Christmas toys on each stamp.
