Consult a professional postage stamp valuation catalog. The Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue publishes a yearly list of postage stamp values, including historically important stamps as well as recent stamps of significant value. The Scott Standard Catalogue cannot be obtained online, but may be found at a local public library or any bookstore. The Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalogue is another resource for stamp values, and can also be found at local libraries and bookstores.
Check online resources for stamp valuations. Since the Internet may have more current information than yearly stamp catalogs, online resources may be helpful for current valuation of stamps. Stanley Gibbons has a website, allworldstamps.com, which allows users to check stamp values online. Other online resources include FindYourStampValue.com and StampCatalogue.org.
Examine the stamp for any factors that may affect the value. Factors that can affect stamp value include creases, tears, fading of color, spots, stains, alterations, stamp cancellation, damage of the perforation around the edge of the stamp or the presence of stamp glue. List all the factors that are present when using stamp guides to determine value.
Consult a local stamp dealer to confirm stamp valuation. The American Philatelic Society offers an online list of local stamp dealer members. Search by personal name, business name, city, state, country or the business specialty to find a stamp dealer in your area.
