Selling Stamps No Longer in Circulation
Conduct research on your canceled stamp or stamps to determine exactly what you have. Is your stamp part of a set? If so, do you have the complete set? How old are your stamps and how rare are they? These are all important questions that go directly to how much someone else is willing to pay to buy your stampsr. You can get this type of information from dealers, other collectors or professional appraisers.
Draft a good description of your canceled stamps. It's one thing to know what you have, but it's equally important that you are able to convey what you have. If you decide on placing an ad in the paper or attempt to use a dealer, potential buyers may walk right past your stamps. Furthermore, an inadequate description could make you susceptible to being taken advantage of because of your lack of knowledge. For example, if you were to approach a potential buyer with an inadequate description of what you have, they may offer you a price well below its market value in the hope that you don't know how valuable your stamps are.
Decide on a method to advertise your canceled stamps and utilize the description you drafted in Step 2. Adds in newspapers work fine, but one of the most common methods for selling stamps is through auction websites such as eBay. These sites allow other people to bid on your item. If you have a large collection that you know has a substantial worth, it may be worthwhile to approach an auction house with your canceled stamps. Auction houses attract the kind of clientele that have the means--and the knowledge and desire--to purchase an expensive collection.
