Organize and categorize the stamps you want to include in your stamp book. Some collectors display their stamps thematically. For example, they'll dedicate one page to stamps with sunsets, another to stamps featuring American presidents, and another to stamps with animals. Before you affix a single stamp, decide how your book will be organized, page by page. It can be difficult to remove stamps from books once they're affixed, and stamps may be damaged by removal.
Visit an online or brick-and-mortar retailer and browse through his stamp collection books. Many stamp albums are pre-designed, meaning they have spaces for specific stamps, often with a brief history of each stamp below each slot. You may want to buy a blank stamp book instead, so you can organize it the way you choose.
Purchase stamp hinges or stamp mounts when you're ready to set up your stamp collection book. Stamp hinges are small, transparent pieces of paper that turn sticky and gummy when licked or wet. Stamp hinges fit nicely on the backs of stamps and let you place your stamps anywhere on a page. Stamp mounts fit over the pages of your book. Stamp mounts are safe for stamps but are usually arranged in rows and can constrain the layout of your pages.
Affix stamps to the pages of your book using either mounts or hinges. Leave room for stamps you may not have and wish to add later. If you choose, title each page and write a brief summary of each stamp that includes its date of printing or country of origin.
