How to Protect Stamps From Fingerprints

Part of a stamp's value is based on its condition. Because stamps are made of thin, fragile paper, there are many ways collectible stamps can be marred or damaged. Even fingerprints on stamps can damage them because of the oil in the skin. That's why it's important that stamps are handled with care and touched with human fingers as little as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Handle stamps whenever possible by using stamp tongs. Similar to tweezers, these tongs come in assorted lengths with various types of tips. The tongs can be slid underneath the stamp. You can then squeeze the tips together to pick it up.

    • 2

Store groups of collectible stamps temporarily in glassine envelopes and cover sleeves. Made of semi-transparent paper, these containers protect their contents, and you can see the stamps without taking them out.

    • 3

Store stamps by mounting them on stock pages in stock books. These books have horizontal glassine strips that hold the stamps in place. They also have clear plastic page covers to protect from fingerprints.
