What Are Some Common Photography Poses?

When taking portrait photographs, there are a variety of poses depending on the number of subjects and the body types of those individuals. Try to be creative and add visual interest whenever possible, keeping background elements simple.
  1. Straight-on pose

    • A straight-on pose is where the subject faces the camera with squared shoulders. This is best for thin subjects.

    Three-quarters view pose

    • A three-quarters view pose is great for individuals who are heavyset. Position your subject with one shoulder closer to the camera than the other.

    Full-length body pose

    • Full-length body poses can work for both tall and short individuals by changing your camera's perspective. Lower the camera to look up toward a shorter person, and elevate the camera (stand on a ladder or other secure elevated platform) to look down toward a taller person. This helps to decrease the emphasis on the subject's height.

    Close-up pose

    • Close-up poses showing just the head can emphasize interesting facial features. Try experimenting with flashes or natural lighting to increase the effects.

    Small group poses

    • Groups of five or six people can be given a more intimate feel if posed in a natural interaction, such as a meeting or playing a game.

    Large group poses

    • Portraits with groups of six or more people can be posed in two rows with individuals seated in the front row and standing in the back row. Alternatively, you may be able to place shorter individuals in the front row with taller people in the back. Be sure that every group member can see the camera lens. If they cannot see the lens, the camera cannot see them.
