How to Make a Paper Cowgirl Hat

Paper hats are an excellent craft for appealing to children's imaginations. This article will teach you how to make a cowgirl hat that will be about the right size for a doll. To make a hat large enough for a little girl, substitute a larger piece of paper.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Paper Cowgirl Hat

    • 1

Lay the paper in front of you in the portrait position and fold it in half, bringing the top down to meet the bottom. This will leave you with an 8-1/2 by 5-1/2-inch rectangle with the crease on the top.

    • 2

Measure 3 inches from the upper right-hand corner along the top crease. Fold down the 3-inch corner. Repeat with the upper left-hand corner. This will leave 2-1/2 inches straight along the top of the paper and both upper corners folded down, forming triangle shapes. The straight ridge along the top is the crown of the hat.

    • 3

Fold the paper up from the bottom so that the lower edge of the paper is touching the bottom edge of each triangle. Work only with the top layer of paper, leaving the bottom layer of paper unfolded at this time.

    • 4

Place your finger at the center of the crease you just created. This crease is now the lower edge of the paper, since the actual edge of the paper is folded up. Remember you are still working with only the top layer of paper. Fold up the right, outside edge of the crease until it touches the bottom of the right-hand triangle corner. It will also be touching the real bottom edge of the paper, since you folded that up in the previous step. Continue to hold your finger in the center so that you do not fold up the entire length of the paper, only the right side. Repeat with the left side. This will leave you with two long, slender triangles, their points touching at the center where you held your finger.

    • 5

Fold up the paper along the lower edge of the folded down corners. This is the line you created in Step 3. Once this fold is complete, the long, slender triangles you just made will no longer be visible.

    • 6

Flip the paper over. The bottom layer of paper is now the top layer. Repeat Steps 3 through 5. Both sides should now be identical except that the folded corners from Step 2 will only be visible from one side. Your paper is now in the shape of a cowgirl hat, but it still two-dimensional.

    • 7

Open up the hat by inserting your hand into the bottom of it and gently pulling the sides apart. Flatten the crown to give it a proper cowgirl shape.

    • 8

Tape the corners of the brim where the paper meets.

    • 9

Open the hat wider and mold the paper where necessary to create more definition between the crown and the brim.

    • 10

Decorate the hat with markers to make a glamorous fashion accessory any little cowgirl could be proud to wear.
