How to Make Cheap Picture Frames

Make cheap picture frames using unique items you can find at thrift stores, garage sales, or that you may have around the house.

These simple ideas are great for one-of-a-kind display pieces or for gift giving. Consider people's interests and hobbies then make them a special picture frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Use vintage potholder looms to make cheap picture frames. If you're lucky enough to find some of these old metal looms, with the teeth sticking up, carefully decide what to frame in it.

Use a piece of cardboard cut to the size of the loom and make a scrapbook background and mount a photo then place inside the loom.

Use a horseshoe to make a cheap picture frame. Old, used horseshoes make great picture frames. Clean the horseshoe and paint it if desired. Use the nails at the back to secure the photo or picture and slide the image in for a unique Western look.

Use a checkerboard. Apply Mod Podge to affix the mat, scrapbook paper, and picture (or any combination of these) to the checkerboard to make a unique picture frame.

If you don't want to affix the picture permanently to the checkerboard, add removable sticky tab material to the back of the picture or piece to be 'framed.'

Use plates or saucers. I prefer just about everything vintage but you could use newer plates and saucers to make cheap picture frames. Carefully cut the image to fit the inner circle of the plate or saucer leaving the outer edge as the decorative element of the frame.

      Hang using a plate hanger.

Use clip boards. Old clip boards are often available at garage sales or thrift stores and can be used to make a changeable picture frame. Paint the clip board if desired.

Then lift the clip board and insert the picture and close the clip. Prop up or hang on the wall.

Use book covers, fronts or backs. The back covers of Little Golden Books back make great cheap picture frames.

The characters from the many Little Golden Books like Mickey Mouse, the poky little puppy, Big Bird, and more form a circle around the outer edge of the back cover. Place the photo or picture inside the circle of characters using Mod Podge.

To hang, use a plate hanger or reusable tacky adhesive to hang on the wall. Or staple a ribbon to the top two corners of the book cover then hang with a nail. Another option is to nail directly through the lightweight book board to the wall.

Or use the entire book, as shown in the introductory photo, and prop the book open and stand it on a table or shelf.

Choose a nice cigar box and affix a photo to the front or back using removable tacky adhesive or Mod Podge for a permanent option. Prop up on a shelf for an easy and quick picture frame.
