Choose the type of material to use in constructing the body of the sock doll. Using a sock over nylon hosiery for more durable for long term handling. Depending on the size of the sock doll. You can use 3 socks to create the body, legs, head and arm construction. Make a paper cut out pattern of the body parts.
Create the face on the sock doll by pinching the nose and ears. Sew one or two stitches and pull tightly to form the shape of the noses, ears and reinforce as need by adding additional stitches. Pinching under the nose to form a mouth and sew a circle around the lips. Sew a straight-line in the middle of the formation from right or left to separate the lips.
Develop the body of the sock doll by cutting the length of the sock from the ankle up, stitch one end of the sock and stuff the body until firm close the other end by stitching it together. To develop the arms cut one to two inches on the fold of the sock. Place the stuffing inside the fold and roll it like a tootsie roll and stitch to close. Stitch and sew the bottom of the arm to form a wrist and form the hand by stitching individual fingers or just the thumb. Form the leg the same way. Attach the arms and legs to the body. Take the head formation and stitch the neckline to replace the rubber band.
Cut two arms socket out of the sock head piece. Place the head over the body and pull the arm through the head body piece. Sew a seam to trim the arm openings. Sew the head sock to the leg and close the bottom of the sock between the legs. Make hair using color yarn. Draw a line dividing the head in to two equal parts. Stitch and sew a long piece of yard looped. Attach individually pieces of yard, one after the other sew in middle of the yard. The doll hair should have equal length of yard on both side of the head. Trim as desired.
To make clothes for your doll. Use an another sock. Use the foot of the sock as the shirt. Cut before the fold as desired. Cut the top band of the sock as the skirt. Add a draw string for the waistband.
Trace the paper cut out on to the sock with a pen or black marker. The easy part of the sock doll to make is the head. Stuff the bottom of the sock with cotton stuffing. Form a ball tie off with a rubber band. Place pressure on the formation to make sure it is tight and a firm ball in shape of a head.
