How to Make Walking Canes

Find the perfect length stick, preferably about an inch to an inch and a half at its widest point. Make sure it is comfortable for you to hold and to use functionally, about a couple of inches above from where your hand dangles and the ground should be sufficient, or whatever you desire. Use the saw and cut to the desired length.

Now locate the handle end. You can attach a curved handle, or if you are lucky enough and had enough foresight and chose a stick with a curved end use that. Taking the sandpaper sand smooth the handle end of your walking cane. Now if you have chosen a stick with bark on it you have a choice. If you prefer the natural look of the bark leave it, if not take the sandpaper and sand away all evidence of the bark.

Now that you have either sanded away the bark or left it you will need to finish. There are many products out there designed to help the bark stay on the cane, just do a quick internet search to find the best ones. For sanded smooth models use your favorite wood stain and follow the directions.

Eventually you will have to tip the cane itself. There are several tip choices out there, just look at hardware stores for rubber stoppers. Or if you are rather ambitious go for a copper or metal tip, you will probably have to either find one or beat the metal into shape around the tip of the cane itself. Enjoy!
