Ideas for the Game Outburst

Outburst is a popular board game by Parker Brothers, oriented toward adults and marketed as a "game of verbal explosions." Outburst is also a game of lists. Participants divide into two teams, and the teams then try to beat each other in providing answers to topic cards. The game can be adapted easily for a variety of theme events and age levels.
  1. G-Rated

    • Take the idea of topic cards and create your own kid-friendly version of the game. Make 100 topic cards on topics such as marine animals, jungle creatures, characters from "Beauty and the Beast" or sundae ingredients. If planning a themed children's party, you can create cards that fit the theme. For example, if your theme is movies, you might create cards asking the children to list 10 Disney films. Involve your family in the card-creating fun to help generate ideas.

    Baby Shower

    • It can be challenging to come up with new ideas for baby shower games. Try inviting guests to participate in a baby-themed game of Outburst, using categories for topic cards such as labor, reasons a baby cries, first foods, baby toys, baby milestones or essential baby supplies. Divide your shower guests into teams of two or three and have them try to complete the cards. Give a time limit of 10 minutes to complete 10 items for each of the cards. Have small take-home gifts, such as votive candles, for the winning team.

    Bachelorette

    • For this version of Outburst, anything goes. Consider honeymoon-themed cards, such as honeymoon destinations, wedding movies, reasons to disagree with your mother-in-law, bedroom ideas or whatever other ideas you can create. Involve the bridesmaids in coming up with creative wedding-themed cards.

    Christmas

    • 'Tis the season for a game the whole family can enjoy. Create a special game for your family this holiday season by creating personalized Outburst topic cards. Choose topics such as candy cane flavors, elf names, 12 days of Christmas, Christmas movies, ornaments on Grandma's tree, Christmas carols or reindeer names. You can adapt the rules slightly to require fewer answers, particularly if you select topics with few answers or if you have very small children playing.
