Fun Strategy Games for Girls

There are a lot of strategy games out on the market, but many of them have a martial theme that can be less interesting for girls than boys. This shouldn't exclude them from these exciting and educational games, as there are plenty of strategy games based on other themes. These games are just as challenging and just as competitive. even if victory doesn't involve imposing crushing military defeat. Of course this isn't to say that girls shouldn't step into Napoleon's or Boudicca's shoes if the urge takes them, or that boys should be shy about enjoying animal-oriented games.
  1. Days of Wonder

    • Days of Wonder is one of the foremost manufacturers of family-orientated, original board games. They have games such as "Ticket to Ride," which puts the players in the role of competitors in a mad dash to visit as many cities as possible in a short time. It has tricky strategy with wonderful illustrations and no killing. They also publish games with strong female characters at their center such as "Cleopatra and the Society of Architects."

    Mayfair Games

    • Mayfair Games produce a range board games that will appeal to girls. "Farfalia" is a game centered around a set of naturalists who are racing to collect rare species. "Dos Rios" and "La Strada" are both strategic games requiring the players to out-maneuver each other. The first requires the players to get control of a valley's water supply, while the second involves cunningly bypassing each other's trade routes.

    Rio Grande Games

    • Rio Grande produce some animal-orientated games, including "Aquaretto," where players take on the role of water-zoo owners, competing to make their zoo the most successful. They also produce the classic game "Carcasonne." This requires players to lay tiles in a way that builds up their medieval land, linking churches, towns and roads. A small plastic pig also proves vital to success.

    Z-Man Games

    • Z-Man also make strategy games. They have a horse-racing game, "Long Shot," that allows players to buy, breed and bet on their horses. They also produce "Reef Encounter," that pits players strategic skills against one another as they try to manage the complex ecology of the reef. Finally, they have "Agricola," a card-based farming game that can be played as a family or on your own.
