How to Make an RPG Board Game

Do you enjoy board games? Computer games? Role-playing games? Chances are you have played the RPG classic Dungeons and Dragons or one of many other RPGs available today. A growing trend in board gaming is the RPG or role-playing board game which is similar to the classic RPGs. The only difference is that these are generally meant to be played in a single sitting, like a board game. Large companies including Mayfair, Rio Grande and Fantasy Flight produce and sell RPG board games, but if you want to try and make your own RPG board game, it will require time and creativity to create a game that you and your friends can enjoy playing.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up maps and encounters for your players. Be sure enemies have corresponding miniatures which can be represented on your dry erase hexagon board.

    • 2

Give your players miniatures for game play corresponding to the characters they chose from a pool of characters you have created. You can purchase miniatures online or at specialty stores or use color-coded generic character pieces.

    • 3

Draw your map on the hexagon board using dry erase markers. This will allow you to redraw the board if the basics of your game changes.

    • 4

Position characters, monsters and terrain on the board.

    • 5

Resolve any combat that occurs using dice or any other mechanic you designed. Repeat the steps for each fighting encounter of the game. Determine a winner based on the rules and win conditions of your game. If it is a cooperative game, the players work together to defeat the game. If it is a competitive game, then one player or team will meet the victory conditions first.
