How to Make a Game Token

Game tokens have come a long way from the simple wooden pieces used in "Monopoly" and other board games in the early 20th century. This means that making your own token will involve more than just sticking a penny or thumbtack on the board. To make your own game token, you will need to figure out what kind of tokens your particular game requires, gather the materials and put the token together. You might be able to use simple household objects to make tokens, but a trip to a hobby or craft store could prove beneficial.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what kind of token you want to create. For example, if you are making a "Monopoly" token, create a small wooden or metal piece that depicts any one of that game's traditional household objects or figures. If you are creating a token for "Candy Land," you will need something more specific: a colored, plastic gingerbread person. Design an original token for a board game of your own invention.

    • 2

Gather the materials for your token. If you are creating a replacement token for an existing game, obtain materials that will allow you to create something similar to the pieces that come with the game. Purchase wooden and metal pieces designed specifically for board games from online retailers such as Great Hall Games. If you are creating a token for your own game, acquire materials or figurines appropriate to the game's theme. For example, if your homemade game is a fantasy-based title similar to the "Game of Thrones" board game, use dragon or elf figurines. If you are creating a strategy game like "Settlers of Catan," use more abstract pieces such as small wooden blocks.

Assemble and decorate your token. If you are using a metal or wooden figurine as a token, add color to it using model paint. Use items such as colored feathers, pipe cleaners, buttons and craft eyes to accent your game piece.
