Instructions

    • 1

Chill the frosted cake for one hour so the frosting sets. Stuff your piping bag with approximately 1 cup of colored gel icing. Alternatively, you can use a prefilled disposable tube of colored gel frosting, which can be found in grocery stores and sold with different tips.

    • 2

Affix the tip of your choice to the piping bag or gel tube. Select a Kanji stencil sheet depicting symbols of your liking. Depending on the size of your cake and the shape, the type of stencil you choose will determine how the cake looks.

    • 3

Lay the clean Kanji stencil lightly over the frosted, chilled cake. Position it so that the character you want is in the desired location on the cake. Hold the gel icing tube or piping bag about 1/2 inch from the surface of the cake within the borders of the Kanji stencil.

    • 4

Squeeze the piping bag gently while steadying the tip with your free hand, filling in the stencil with gel icing. Alternatively, simply squeeze the gel icing tube if it's of the disposable type.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 to fill in as many of the Kanji Stencil characters you need to create a meaningful message or what-have-you. With enough practice with the stencils, you may eventually be able to simply free-hand the designs onto your Asian-inspired desserts.
