Game Setup
After putting the Penguin Pile-Up iceberg on the game base and the flag atop the iceberg, players put the pieces together for each of the 24 penguins. The iceberg goes in the middle of the play area, giving all players easy access. Up to six players may participate in a game of Penguin Pile-Up, with all players receiving the same number of penguins. Players put any remaining penguins off to the side and do not use them during the game.
Gameplay
Players take turns putting their penguins on the iceberg, with the youngest player starting the game and play continuing to the left. During a turn, players place one penguin on any open spot on the iceberg. To avoid knocking penguins down and placing their penguin securely on a spot, players may turn the iceberg in the direction of their choice. Once a player positions a penguin securely in place, the next player takes a turn.
If a penguin falls during a player's turn, that player takes his penguin back and cannot place another penguin on the iceberg until his next turn. Should more than one penguin fall during a player's turn, that player takes possession of all fallen penguins. As the game progresses, space becomes limited, leaving players to scramble for positions on the iceberg.
Winning The Game
The first player to put all of her penguins on the iceberg without knocking any penguins down in her last turn wins Penguin Pile-Up. If the game has more than two players, remaining competitors may continue playing to see who finishes second, third and beyond.
One-Player Variation
While multiplayer Penguin Pile-Up games require players to react to opponents' moves on the iceberg, players may test their ability to place all 24 penguins on the iceberg, without opponent interference. Players put any penguins they knock down off to the side. After running out of penguins to place on the iceberg, players count the number of penguins that remain standing on the iceberg. Players then start a new game and try to top their highest score.
