Instructions for Waddington's Breakout

Knowing the rules of a game enables you to play it correctly. Breakout is a board game released by Waddingtons in the 1970s. In the game you must create a maze and pass your piece through it before your opponents reach a certain distance in all directions from the Start piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll the dice. The person with the highest role starts the game. Each play positions their token on a "Start piece" on different sides of the board. They must decide which direction they will leave the "Start piece" from. Roll the two dice and move along a path the number of spaces indicated. You cannot move back on yourself during the same turn.

    • 2

Place maze pieces. If you roll an even number then you may place one maze piece. If you roll a double like a "6" + "6," for example, then you may place two maze pieces. You may place a piece alongside any piece already in place. If you place two pieces then they cannot touch each other on any side.

    • 3

Follow the path through the pieces. You can follow any path that is not blocked by a hedge. You can also move through tunnels, which are signified by two crescents on the board and pass underneath maze areas. The tunnels do not count as a square.

    • 4

Place pieces until all pieces have been used up. You cannot move a piece once it has been placed. You may choose not to place a piece on your turn. You may move along a path travelled by another player. You cannot finish your turn on the same space as another player but you can move past them. If you wish to return to the "Start piece" and go in another direction, that is permitted.

    • 5

Escape the maze. Roll a high enough score to pass beyond the border while avoiding any maze pieces. The remaining players can continue to play until a "loser" (the last person left in the maze) is designated.
