How to Be Good at Carrom

Carrom is a board game that is best described as a combination of marbles, billiards and hockey. In this board game, players must use round checker-like pieces and slide them across a square board. The aim of carom is to be the first player to sink your nine playing pieces and the red queen piece into the pockets to collect the most points. This game is partly based on luck because you don't know where the pieces will go, but also has a large strategy component in terms of how you go about scoring points.

Instructions

Apply carom powder to the surface of the board before you start the game. Carrom powder is specifically designed to decrease the friction between the pieces and the board. The result of this powder is better, more efficient gameplay since the pieces will be able to slide better across the board---this will make your shots more accurate as well.

Develop a shooting style that works for you. There are many different shooting styles to choose from and everyone's style is different. In order to be good at carom, you have to be able to flick your pieces accurately so they go into the required pouches or push the queen into place. Be sure to stable your hand so the striker is flicked and not pushed; when you push a striker, the shot does not count.

    • 3

Touch the striker using your fingernail before you shoot, confirming that the fingernail is very close to the striker. This will ensure not only that your striker is on the line, but it will improve the accuracy of your shot and help prevent you from hurting your nail when you flick the piece. If your nail is too far away, it will really hurt when you hit the piece, which can ruin your shot.

Always aim to hit the queen into a pocket, and then immediately cover the queen with another one of your pieces. The queen is the most important piece in a game of carom because once the queen is covered, it is a race to sink all the pieces on the board thereby "winning" the board. If you win the board, you will get an additional three points just for sinking the queen.
