How to Make a Game Rubric

A rubric is used to grade multiple samples based on the same set of criteria. If you don't have a rubric with established criteria, you are going to have difficult time judging games consistently. However, with your rubric in place, you will have greater ease comparing the performance of games based on several categories. If you are writing reviews, or simply comparing ideas, the rubric will help ensure that your judgments are rooted in the same principles from game to game, and you are not merely acting on your own whims.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down categories for your game rubric. Is the game fun? How well does it make use of its theme? Are the rules clear and easy to understand? Does the pace move consistently throughout the game, or are there dead space at times? If you are grading a video game, consider things like graphics, sound and control as well as game-play.

    • 2

Use the word-processing program of your choice to create a rubric. Create a table with enough rows and columns for the categories, the individual scores, the total score for each category and a cell for the total overall score (check the link in the resource section for a visual example).

    • 3

Clearly define the criteria for each score within a category. For instance, if you are judging game-play on a scale from one to four, write detailed criteria for a one, a two, a three and a four.

    • 4

Type the categories into their corresponding cells within the rubric. Also type the definition of each rating within a category into the appropriate cell.

    • 5

Judge each game according to each category on the rubric. Using the score definitions, choose a score for each category, and tally up the total overall score once you have graded the game according to all categories.
