How to Make a Board Game Using 20 Sided Dice

Board games have been found in civilizations throughout human history. Possibly the earliest known board game is Senet, which originated in Predynastic Egypt. The game is even depicted in an ancient tomb painting, though its original rules are lost to us. In the modern day, there is a proliferation of board games that involve luck, skill or some combination of both. Some of the most challenging games use 20-sided dice and strategy to determine the winner. You can create your own version of an enjoyable "battle, take, win" board game with a little work and some simple materials.

  • Card stock
  • 20-sided dice

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Draw horizontal and vertical lines every one inch on your 30-by-30-inch sheet of paper using the straight edge. This will give you a playing board with 900 1-inch squares.

    • 2

Cut out 90 1-inch squares from the card stock.

    • 3

Color 20 of the squares green with the markers to represent trees. Color 20 squares brown to represent blocking terrain. Color 20 blue to represent water. Draw a black circle on 10 squares. These will be portals. Draw the letter "M" on 10 squares to represent monsters. Draw the letter "T" on the last 10 squares to represent treasure. Flip over the treasure and monster squares. Color five monsters and five treasures red on the back. Color the remaining monsters and treasures yellow on the back.

    • 4

Gather two players and distribute the card stock pieces. Each player should get 10 trees, 10 blocking terrains, 10 waters, five portals, five monsters and five treasures. Make sure each player's monsters and treasures are the same color on the back.

    • 5

Take turns placing the card stock pieces around the board until all the pieces are down. Trees, terrain and water all represent obstacles that players have to go around. Portals represent magical gateways to other portals on the board. Monsters and treasures should be placed face down. Treasures, monsters and portals may not be completely surrounded by obstacles.

    Playing

    • 6

Place the miniatures or playing tokens along the board edge closest to each player. One-inch fantasy miniatures work well for this, or you can use glass beads, coins or other similar-size tokens. Each player should have 10 playing pieces.

    • 7

Take turns rolling one 20-sided die to determine movement. The number rolled is the number of squares a player can move on that turn. The movement points can be used by one playing piece or divided among two or more, so long as the total adds up to no more than the number rolled. Several pieces can move as one group so long as there are enough movement points.

    • 8

Battle your opponent's playing pieces by moving into an adjacent square. Have each player roll a 20-sided die and compare the results. The lowest roll loses that round. Mark on the notepad when you lose. Continue battling until one player suffers three losses. Eliminate that playing piece from the game. Playing pieces that were previously declared to be moving in a group can continue fighting until all of the group's pieces are eliminated. The attacking player can call off the battle and retreat at any time. With each new battle, playing pieces start at full strength.

    • 9

Move onto a portal space to get free movement to any other portal on the board. A playing piece can only move through a portal once per turn. A group can move through a portal together.

    • 10

Move onto a face-down square belonging to your opponent to turn it over and discover either a monster or treasure. If it's a monster, you must battle it using 20-sided dice the same way as you would battle your opponent's playing pieces, except that it takes four losses to kill a monster. If it's a treasure, remove it from the board and collect it.

    • 11

Win the game by eliminating all your opponent's playing pieces or by collecting all five of his treasures.
