Play Online
With the plethora of free online versions, playing a game of Battleship has never been easier. Likewise, many versions allow for games against a computer opponent, thus making Battleship a great way to spend time while alone. Playing online (at boardgamecapital.com) eliminates the time of setting up the board and putting it away.
Make Your Own Board
To play Battleship in a new and exciting way, make your own map and pieces. Doing so is quick and easy and simply requires a grid (such as graph paper) that you can add coordinates to. By designing new and interesting shapes for the ships, you will also enjoy a chance to implement new strategies for "sinking" your opponent's vessels.
Play With "Repair" Options
In conventional Battleship, a "hit" on a ship marks damage to that vessel. When all portions of the ship become hit, the vessel sinks. However, players seldom know which direction to move after an initial hit and often guess wrong. By implementing rules that a "follow-up miss" (a turn which misses a ship after hitting it the previous turn) repairs all damage to a vessel, you will extend the duration of the game and add an exciting new dimension to each turn.
Change the Lingo and Add Stakes
When a game turns stale, one way to make it more interesting is to alter the lingo. Rather than "sinking battleships," for instance, players may "eat candy bars" -- literally. To add stakes to the game, bet different household chores on the sinking of a ship. One lost ship, for example, could mean it's your opponent's turn to unload the dishwasher.
