Speed Scrabble Directions

A game of Scrabble is a great way to pass time while flexing one's linguistic muscles. There may be occasion where you wish to play a speedier variant though, such as when you're strapped for time or are playing with a young participant who may have a shorter attention span. Speed Scrabble, sometimes known as "Take Two Scrabble" or "Bananagrams," is the perfect game for these occasions and has a simple rule system that any player can pick up quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a suitable surface to play on as Speed Scrabble does not use the standard Scrabble board. A large flat surface such as a kitchen or dining room table is ideal.

    • 2

Deal seven tiles face down to each player. The game begins when the youngest player in the game says "go."

    • 3

Turn each tile over and begin forming words as you would in normal Scrabble, forming your own word "tree" with each word interconnecting or playing off of another word. In Speed Scrabble players do not interconnect with other players but instead build their own "tree." Players are attempting to use every tile in their hand to make a tree consisting of all seven letters.

    • 4

Call out "two more tiles" as soon as you have created a word tree that uses all seven tiles. Upon this being called out, every player takes two more tiles from the bag.

    • 5

Continue adding words and letters to your tree. Players may either maintain the word tree they had built up or tear it down and build it afresh. Again, all words must be interconnected and players are not allowed to build two separate word trees.

    • 6

Call out "two more tiles" as soon as all tiles dealt to you are in a tree. Players again receive two more tiles from the bag when this is called. Play continues as normal and in each round the first person to exhaust all of their tiles calls out "two more tiles" with two more tiles then being dealt out, so players eventually have 11, 13, 15 and so on tiles in their hand. If there are not enough tiles left in the bag for each player to receive two more, the player calls out "one more tile." If there is not enough for this, the player calls out "I'm out" and the game ends.

    • 7

Calculate your final score by adding up the tile value of every tile in your tree, giving yourself a ten-point bonus for any word of seven or more letters played. The player who called "I'm out" also gets the tile value of all unplayed tiles in his opponents' hands as well. The player with the highest score wins.
