Pirate Board Games

Board games are an entertaining way for families and friends to spend some time together. Pirate themes can be found in movies, on TV, in books, at theme parks and in board games. These games can capture the adventure and competitiveness of buccaneering life on the high seas.
  1. SwashBuckled Pirate Board Game

    • In the epic high seas adventure SwashBuckled, players gain money by delivering cargo, and must earn 100,000 pounds to win. The game can be played by two to six players, ages 10 and up. The board depicts a map of the world that has an antique style and an old world feel, as it is based on maps of the early 17th century, the time period in which the game is set. Game pieces include ships, cargo cards and wooden dice.

In the game, players, as the captains of ships, travel to exotic ports delivering cargo. Each player must roll the dice to determine the country he must set sail to. To earn money players pick a cargo card labeled gold, spices, diamonds, and other goods. Players can also earn money by attacking another placers ship, should they land on the same square as any other player. The attacking player rolls three dice, the defender rolls two. If the attacked player rolls a higher number, they have successfully attacked.

The game is designed in a such a way that any player that is lagging can suddenly take the lead; any player that is in the lead can suddenly begin to fall behind. This keeps the players engaged, and entertained.

    DICEcapades! Word Pirates

    • DICEcapades! Word Pirates is a Creative Child Magazine Preferred Choice Award winning game for ages 6 and up. Players must use not only their strategy skills but their spelling skills as well to reach the loot.

Playing pieces include four pirate pawns, 100 letter dice, a jumbo dice, 10 bridge pieces and 10 wall pieces. Each player starts on one of the game boards four corners. They use the 10 letter dice they received at the start of the game to get to the treasure located at the very center of the board. When players cannot create a word, they can use the game's bridge and wall pieces (five per player).

    Dread Pirate

    • Dread Pirate can be played by two to four players, ages 8 and older. Players win by gathering more treasure than the other "captains" (players). This can be done by legitimate trading and working in ports or, the illegitimate way -- and the more pirate-like way of going about things -- stealing from the other captains.

The game includes a treasure bag for each player, golden doubloons and gems. Through the game, players collect as much treasure (gems of various colors) from ports. Once all of the treasure has been collected, the game ends and the player with the most treasure wins.

The game is available in three elegantly presented editions: old century (a 17th century-style box) book shelf (a wooden bookshelf box) and signature (a wooden chest).

    Pirate's Cove: Days of Wonder

    • Pirate's Cove has won many coveted board game awards including the Tric Trac d'Or, the Schweizer Spielepreis Strategy Game and the Spiel der Spiele. The object of the game is to sail the seas and be the most reckless and feared pirate on water.

Game pieces include dice, cards, and spinners. Dice rolled are "cannons," and when a player rolls a five or a six she can "attack" another player's ship. Cards are used to help players earn treasure or fame, the objective of the game. Each player receives a spinner, also called a "captains wheel" which determines the player's course. There are six possibilities including taking a shot with a cannon or going to a tavern (to socialize and earn fame).

A player wins by earning more famous points (or rather, infamous points) than any other player, and gathering fame by telling stories of her many conquests, burying treasure and winning battles. The game can be played by three to five players ages 8 and over, and each game generally takes about 90 minutes.
