The Best Board Games for Kids 9 & Up

Board games provide an engaging way for kids to have fun with their friends and family while challenging them intellectually. While having a good time, kids can also work on their verbal, linguistic and mathematical skills. In addition to working the minds of their players, board games give kids a way to improve their social skills and interact with others. These games are intended for kids age nine and up.
  1. Outburst Junior

    • Outburst Junior is the kids' version of the standard Outburst game. The game is recommended for kids age seven and above and can be played by up to eight players. The point of the game is for kids to work with a partner to identify as many correct answers in different categories. Each category contains the 10 most common answers based on surveys.

    Balderdash Junior

    • Balderdash Junior is also a kids' version of a traditionally adult board game. The game is recommended for kids eight and up, and can be played by a maximum of six players. Kids take turns reading off an uncommon word. The child who reads the word writes down the correct definition listed on the card, while the other kids make up their own definitions. Points are earned by getting others to guess fake answers or guessing the real definition. The player that reads the definitions gets points if no one is correct.

    Battleship

    • Battleship is a popular board game in which each player hides his ship on different parts of a grid that the opposing player cannot see. Kids take turn guessing points on the grid. If they guess correctly, the ships are eliminated. The goal is to eliminate all of the opposing ships. The game is suggested for kids eight and over and can only be played by two kids at once.

    Scrabble

    • Scrabble helps kids improve their lingual skills and even challenges them mathematically. The game is suggested for kids age eight and over. Each player gets wooden tiles with letters on them. All letters are assigned different point values. The goal is to spell out words on the board while taking into account how many points can be earned. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins. Hasbro, the company that manufactures Scrabble, also offers a Scrabble Junior version of the popular game.

    Monopoly

    • Monopoly is a classic board game suggested for players eight and older. Kids roll two dice to move around the board. Kids can purchase properties that will earn them play money when other players land on their spaces. The more houses and hotels are placed on properties, the more money other players must pay if they land on them. Other factors such as chance cards can affect how well a player does. The goal is to be the final player remaining with money.
