Board Games for Kindergarten

Age-appropriate board games can teach kindergarten students many lessons, including math and memory skills, and life skills such as following rules and good sportsmanship. Teaching 4- and 5-year-olds to play these games can also help youngsters develop a fondness for the social enjoyment of playing with others.
  1. Memory

    • This game consists of 36 pairs of matching picture cards. Spread the cards face down across the table and have the children flip over two at a time to try to make a match. By remembering the locations of each image, students will eventually begin matching the cards. The game can also provide an opportunity to build vocabulary skills by discussing what is pictured on each card.

    Chutes &Ladders

    • Children spin the spinner and then move their game piece the required number of spaces, helping them to practice math and counting skills. If a player lands on a space with a ladder, she gets to climb up the board, but a space with a chute will send her back-tracking to an earlier spot. The first player to reach the end of the board wins the game.

    Hi Ho Cherry-O

    • This classic game also features a spinner. Up to four children get to pick the number of cherries from their tree that comes up on the spinner. The goal is to collect 10 cherries in the basket, but such obstacles as the spilled bucket, dog and bird may result in children subtracting cherries from their container. Players learn counting skills while trying to win the game.

    Considerations

    • A good board game for kindergarten students has simple rules and instructions that do not depend on reading skills for success. The game should build some kind of skill while teaching students fair competition. The setup should be easy, with no batteries required. The materials of the board game should consist of safe, nontoxic materials.
