How to Win the Masterpiece Board Game

Buy paintings at auction, determine the value and try to pass off your forgeries onto other players and the bank. This is the fun of the board game Masterpiece, which first came on the market in 1970. This family game for older children and adults can be surprisingly tricky, with random events happening that can ruin the most intricate of plans. When the last famous painting is sold you must add your cash and art value together, so build your fortune fast to win the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Bid on as many auctions as you can, but don't bid more than half of your money on any one auction. Allow the other players to win any auction that begins to be bid too high. The value of artwork is assigned randomly, so overbidding makes no sense.

    • 2

Keep the value of your paintings as close to even as possible. You may be given opportunities to add value to your painting by winning additional value cards. Place these value cards on your lowest-value painting. If you have to give up a painting to the bank or an auction, keeping your totals even lowers the chance of your being wiped out in a single action.

    • 3

Place your most valuable painting up for sale if you're forced into a bank sale. When you have a choice in these sales, choose to sell the most expensive work of art. You will have the cash in hand, keeping your value toward the ultimate goal of winning. If you're forced into an auction, no one can choose your most valuable work of art for the auction.

    • 4

Sell your least valuable artwork if you draw a card directing you to sell a painting to the bank for $3,500,000. If you have a forgery, this is the time to get rid of it. If you don't have any forgeries, sell a low value piece.

    • 5

Convert as much of your art to cash as soon as possible. This frees up your money and gives you the opportunity to buy more artwork and make more cash. You win by having the largest total of cash and art value, so keep your winnings in cash as much as possible to give you the opportunity to gain more during the game.
