Instructions to Play Clue

The fictional Mr. Boddy meets an untimely demise in the classic board game "Clue," and all of the guests in his mansion are suspects. Each "Clue" player's goal is to be the first to determine who did it, in what room and with which weapon by process of elimination. A player may make an accusation at any time and look at the answer hidden within a secret envelope. If his accusation is incorrect, he's out of the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Place each of the six weapons in a different room in the mansion. Place each character pawn on the space of the game board that matches its name. Assign each player to the character whose pawn is closest to where she's seated.

    • 2

Separate the "Clue" cards into piles by room, suspect and weapon. Shuffle each individual pile and place one card of each type, without looking at them, in the "Confidential" envelope.

    • 3

Shuffle the remaining cards together and deal them out to the players. Some players may receive more cards than others. Give each player a pen or pencil and a sheet from the notebook pad.

    • 4

Fold the notebook sheet in half to prevent the other players from seeing it. Look at your cards and place an "X" next to the box for each card on your sheet.

    • 5

Start play with the person who has the Miss Scarlet pawn and proceed clockwise around the table.

    • 6

Roll the dice on your turn and move your pawn the indicated number of squares on the game board, horizontally or vertically. Do not enter the same square more than once on a single turn, and do not land on or move through a square occupied by another pawn.

    • 7

End your turn if your pawn lands on a space located outside a room. Enter a room through a doorway or secret passageway. Count a room as one space on the game board and stop moving once you've entered it, regardless of your die roll.

    • 8

Make a guess, or suggestion, when inside a room regarding the details of the murder. Choose one weapon and one suspect and bring them to your current room.

    • 9

Ask the player to your left if she has any cards to disprove your suggestion. If she says yes, she must show you one card from her hand. Continue clockwise around the table if the first player cannot disprove your suggestion until one person can show you a card.

    • 10

Mark the card that was shown to you on your sheet and end your turn. Proceed clockwise around the table. Show cards from your hand to the other players during their suggestions when it is your turn in clockwise sequence.

    • 11

Make an accusation when you think you've determined the suspect, weapon and room of the crime. Announce your choices to the other players and look at the cards in the "Confidential" envelope without showing anyone else.

    • 12

Place the cards back in the envelope if any part of your accusation is incorrect. You can't win at this point, but you do have to show cards to the other players when asked to do so. Continue until someone makes a correct accusation.
