Monopoly Hand Game Instructions

Monopoly is a board games played by young and old alike. The object of the game is to become the wealthiest player through property management while ensuring that your opponents reach bankruptcy. Although the presentation of the game has changed significantly since its introduction in the early 20th century, the way the game is played remains essentially the same. The hand-held version of this game is no exception, with changes stemming from the differences in presentation rather than the game itself.

Instructions

  1. Setup

    • 1

Select your token. The default token is the car, but you can use the "Fwd" and "Back" buttons to scroll through your options. When you have picked your token, press "Go."

    • 2

Pick your opponents. There are five possibilities, listed in an ascending order of difficulty with Diamond Jim being the easiest and Greedy Granny the most difficult. To pick your opponents, press the "Number" key of your opponent, then press "Go."

    • 3

Select "Roll" to start game play.

    Game Play

    • 4

Buy or auction when you land on unowned property. To buy property, push "Buy." To start an auction, press the "Auction" button. Bidding starts at $20 and goes up in increments of $10. When you or your opponent win the bid, press "Go" and the details will flash on the screen before the game continues.

    • 5

Pay rent when you land on a property that it owned by someone else. Press "Go" to pay the fee; it will be doubled if the player owns all of the same-color properties. If the property has a house or a hotel, the rent will rise accordingly. Properties that are mortgaged collect no rent.

    • 6

Estimate your tax at $200 or pay 10 percent of your net worth when you land on the "Income Tax" space. You will not be allowed to check your assets at this time.

    • 7

Go to jail when your token lands on the "Go to Jail" space, hold a "Go to Jail" card from the "Chance" or "Community Chest" spaces, or throw doubles three times in a row. Players in jail are allowed to participate in other aspects of the game, such as auctions and collecting rent. If you land on the "Jail" space, you are considered "Just Visiting" and will not be penalized.

    • 8

Buy houses when you have all of the properties in a color group to increase its value. Once you have four houses on a single property, you will be able to replace them with a hotel to put a higher rental fee on your opponents. When buying houses, you must abide by the rule that you need a house on each property of the color-group to add a second house to any of the properties. This works in the opposite way when selling houses back to the bank; if the bank has no houses left, you must wait for someone to sell their house(s) back to the bank in order to buy your own house(s).

    • 9

Trade with other players to increase your net worth. The only thing that you cannot trade is buildings. Everything else is fair game. Adjust the deal by pushing "Counter." When you have come up with a good trade, select "Complete," then select "Go." To renegotiate if your opponent denies your trade, press "Trade" again and repeat the above steps.

    • 10

Drive your opponents into bankruptcy to win the game. Bankruptcy occurs when any player owes another person money or cannot pay the bank the money he owes. The game is won when all other players are bankrupt and you are left to reap the bragging rights.
