How to Mortgage When Going Bankrupt in Monopoly

When playing Monopoly, you may find yourself running out of money and heading toward bankruptcy. If this happens, you have the option of mortgaging properties to get quick cash and extend your life in the game. If later you begin doing better and can afford to build again, you can unmortgage the properties. Although many players develop "house rules" for how this process works, Hasbro has its own established protocol for mortgaging properties that players can refer to in case of any conflicts.

Instructions

  1. Sell Back Hotels and Houses

    • 1

Add up the number of the houses and hotels that you own on every property in the monopoly that you want to mortgage, with hotels counting as five houses each.

    • 2

Multiply the number of houses by their original prices as stated on their respective Title Deed cards.

    • 3

Divide this number by two to get the amount paid out by the bank for the buildings.

    • 4

Collect the money from the bank, and remove the houses and hotels from the board. You can no longer collect rent for these buildings, although you may continue to collect rent on your unmortgaged properties left on the board.

    Mortgage Your Properties

    • 5

Flip over the Title Deed card for each property that you want to mortgage, and find the mortgage value on the back.

    • 6

Collect the full mortgage value for each property from the bank.

    • 7

Keep the Title Deed Card upside down for as long as the property is mortgaged. While the property is mortgaged, you may not collect rent on it, nor may you collect double rent on the other properties in the monopoly.

    Unmortgage Your Properties

    • 8

Multiply the mortgage value of the property by 1.1 (the extra 10 percent is for interest).

    • 9

Pay this amount to the bank.

    • 10

Turn the Title Deed card back over so it is right side up. You may now collect rent again and build as long as you own all the other properties in the monopoly and they are not mortgaged.
