How to Play Kid-Friendly Risk

"Risk," the self-proclaimed board game of world domination, is recommended for children 10 and up. However, when played with the traditional rules, there are several issues that can make "Risk" hard for young players to grasp. The general strategy is sometimes lost on children, and the lengthy play time may cause them to lose interest. A few modifications can eliminate these factors and make "Risk" more enjoyable for children.

Instructions

    • 1

Give the child the tie-advantage on attack roles. This will lessen the impact of general strategy deficiency and allow the child to win more battles.

    • 2

Play the "Capital Risk" variant that calls for a single fortified capital to be conquered instead of an entire world. Remove all of the " Secret Mission" cards from the "Risk" deck. Select your "Capital" after placing your initial armies. Find the "Risk" card that corresponds to your capital and place it face down in front of you. When all players have selected their capitals, flip the corresponding "Risk" cards face up and proceed with the game.

Allow children to move units between any of their connected territories. This is a traditional rule variation that increases troop mobility and shaves off some play time.
