How to Build Your Own Monster Games

Monsters can haunt your dreams or be part of a fun game you create yourself. You can build a monster board game where the goal is to construct your own monster before your opponent. Each monster is split into parts which you design as part of your game's construction. The game board is also created by you so you can determine how each space will affect your players. The game can be played with five players and you can adjust the rules as you see fit.

Things You'll Need

  • Lightweight modeling clay, five colors
  • Toothpick
  • 25 Velcro squares, 1-inch
  • Thick cardboard square, 16-inch
  • White construction paper, 16-inch square
  • Ruler
  • Markers
  • Coins
  • Die

Instructions

    • 1

Mold five lumps of lightweight, colored modeling clay into five pairs of monster legs. For example, make one lump into a pair of long thin legs and another into a long serpent's tail.

    • 2

Mold five lumps of colored modeling clay into monster torsos. Draw small slashes onto the clay with a toothpick to simulate fur.

    • 3

Mold five lumps of clay into monster heads. Use images of your favorite monsters such as a yeti or the Loch Ness Monster as inspiration.

    • 4

Mold five five lumps of clay into sets of arms for your monsters. Make some of the pairs with claws while others can be tentacles.

    • 5

Set aside all monster parts and allow them to dry. Do not connect the parts.

    • 6

Apply a 1-inch square of Velcro to each part of the clay torsos where each additional body part is connected. Use five squares, one for the head, two for arms and two for legs on the standard monsters. Add the corresponding Velcro pieces to the other body parts.

    • 7

Cover a 16-inch square piece of thick cardboard with white construction paper. Glue the construction paper into place.

    • 8

Measure 2 inches inward from each side of the cardboard edges and draw a line parallel to the edge. This will create the outline of the spaces for your board game.

    • 9

Measure and draw a vertical line every 2 inches along the top edge of the board. Rotate the board and repeat until the outside edge of the board has 38 spaces.

    • 10

Draw four monster heads on four random spaces around the board. Repeat with monster legs, arms and torsos. Spread the spaces out so they fall on each side of the board so at least four monster spaces are on each side of the board.

    • 11

Write instructions on other board spaces such as "Lose One Turn" or "Move to the Nearest Monster Space". Leave a few spaces blank.

    • 12

Write "Start" on one of the board spaces.

    • 13

Color in the rest of the board with markers. Draw pictures of monsters in the center of the board.

    • 14

Place up to five tokens on the starting space. Use coins or mold small people out of clay for the tokens.

    • 15

Instruct players to roll one die and move around the board. When a player lands on a monster space they collect the corresponding monster part. The goal is to collect all four parts of a monster first to win the game.
